KANO, Nigeria — A tragic accident in Kano State has claimed the life of a two-year-old boy, who drowned after falling into a well in Kwankwaso town, located within the Madobi Local Government Area, according to officials and emergency responders.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon after it received an urgent call at approximately 12:15 p.m. alerting rescuers that a young child had fallen into a well. Fire service personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters recovered the boy, identified as Sa’idu Ahmad, in an unconscious state. Despite efforts to tend to him, his life could not be saved. The victim was subsequently handed over to police investigators from the Umar Shehu of Madobi Division as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a separate but similarly tragic incident on the same day, a 28-year-old man, Suleiman Sani, also lost his life after falling into a well in Karofawa Yan Kifi Village in the Ghari Local Government Area. Fire officials said the man was recovered unconscious and later confirmed dead by his family.

The Kano State Fire Service, via its Public Relations Officer Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, extended condolences to both families and urged residents to take extra precautions around uncovered wells and other hazardous open water sources to prevent further accidents.

Open, unguarded wells remain a safety concern in many communities across northern Nigeria, especially during dry periods when water scarcity prompts increased reliance on wells for domestic use. This incident echoes past flooding and well-related deaths across the region and beyond, underscoring the need for stronger public awareness and preventive measures around such everyday dangers.
