MUBANG, Adamawa State, Nigeria — An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on Wednesday afternoon in Mubang village, located in the Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, reigniting fears among residents who are still reeling from a recent Boko Haram assault that killed dozens of villagers late last December.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred at about 2:00 p.m., prompting panic and forcing families to flee their homes in a desperate bid for safety. No casualties have been confirmed so far, although the blast intensified anxiety in a community already traumatised by terrorist activity.

The area remains on high alert following a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters on December 29, 2025, when gunmen reportedly stormed the villages of Mubang and neighbouring Zah and Kijing. That coordinated raid left at least 14 residents dead, including elders and youths, and displaced numerous families amid burning of homes and destruction of food supplies.

Confirming the latest explosion, Hon. Usman Inuwa, Chairman of the Hong Local Government Council, said he was informed of the blast shortly after it occurred. Inuwa’s comments underscored local government concerns about rising insurgent tactics, including the alleged planting of explosive devices in civilian areas.

Residents, still struggling to recover from repeated violence, expressed frustration over what they describe as persistent insecurity and questioned the effectiveness of current security operations — particularly as fears grow that insurgents may be embedding IEDs across vulnerable communities.

The Adamawa State Police Command had not released an official statement by the time of reporting, with spokesperson SP Suleiman Nguroje requesting time to gather comprehensive details on the incident.

This latest explosion highlights the evolving threat environment in Nigeria’s northeast, where Boko Haram and affiliated extremist factions continue to challenge government security efforts, even in the aftermath of destructive raids.
