SASKATOON — Authorities are investigating the death of a patient at the Royal University Hospital early Friday morning following a physical altercation with hospital security staff, prompting calls for clarity and rigorous review of safety protocols at one of Saskatchewan’s largest medical facilities.
According to a statement from the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), Protective Services Officers were summoned to a patient’s room on the hospital’s campus after staff reported a safety concern involving an admitted individual. During the response, a physical altercation occurred between the patient and security officers, after which the patient became unresponsive. Medical personnel attempted resuscitation, but the patient was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The SHA described the incident as a “Critical Incident,” triggering a legislated internal review process that includes a formal assessment and reporting. The authority said it has extended condolences to the patient’s family and is working with them as well as with staff members affected by the event.
The Saskatoon Police Service has been notified and is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Police confirmed they were dispatched shortly after 7 a.m. and are working with the coroner’s service to determine whether the death will be classified as suspicious or if other factors may have contributed.
Hospital officials also noted they are coordinating support for the deceased’s family in collaboration with the Saskatoon Tribal Council, reflecting the diverse community served by the institution. At this stage, authorities have not released the patient’s identity or age pending notification of next of kin.
The SHA emphasised its commitment to accountability and ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, while pledging full cooperation with law enforcement and ongoing review procedures. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
