Boko Haram insurgents on Tuesday ambushed a military convoy in Borno State, killing a newly promoted Nigerian Army lieutenant and injuring others, residents and security sources said.
The attack occurred along the Gwoza–Bama road, a route frequently used by military and civilian vehicles in the North‑East. According to local sources, the insurgents laid an ambush and opened fire on the convoy, forcing soldiers to engage in a brief exchange of gunfire before the attackers withdrew into nearby bushland.
A resident of Gwoza, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns, said the ambush left several military personnel shaken and that one officer — a recently promoted lieutenant — was killed in the exchange. “He was young and had just received his promotion,” the source said, adding that other soldiers were wounded but their exact condition was not clear at the time.
Local leaders confirmed the incident but deferred official casualty figures to security authorities. Efforts to reach the Military Public Relations team in the theatre of operations for comment were not successful by the time of publication.
