ABUJA, Nigeria — A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja on Wednesday arraigned former Senator Elisha Abbo on charges of allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl, granting him bail in a case that has reignited national debate over sexual violence, accountability and the treatment of powerful figures within the Nigerian justice system.

Abbo, a one-time representative of Adamawa North Senatorial District, appeared in court following his arrest by the Department of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, which charged him with rape, sexual assault and related offences under the Penal Code Act. The defendant pleaded not guilty to all counts when the matter was called before Justice Habeeb Abiru

At the proceedings, prosecution counsel had the charge sheet read to the court, detailing accusations that the ex-lawmaker engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor — a grievous offence under Nigerian law that carries significant penalties if proven. The specifics of the alleged incident, including timing and location, were outlined in the indictment but remain subject to strict judicial confidentiality given the age of the complainant.

During the hearing, counsel for Abbo prayed the court for bail, arguing that the defendant is a “law-abiding citizen with strong ties to the community” and poses no flight risk. After considering submissions from both sides, Justice Abiru granted bail, imposing stringent conditions including the surrender of Abbo’s passports and a requirement that he report regularly to the police pending the trial. The judge also cautioned the accused that failure to comply with bail terms could result in revocation and re-remand.

The case has drawn public attention not only because of Abbo’s status as a former federal lawmaker, but also due to longstanding concerns over the treatment of sexual offences in Nigeria’s legal system. Rights groups and activists have long decried what they describe as impunity for powerful individuals accused of gender-based violence, urging more robust enforcement and victim support mechanisms.

In 2019, Abbo was previously embroiled in controversy after video footage surfaced showing him assaulting a shop worker in Abuja, an incident that sparked national outrage and ultimately led to his loss of the Senate seat he held. That episode contributed to intense debate about accountability and public trust in elected officials.

Civil society organisations have reacted to the renewed allegations and court developments with calls for due process and justice for all parties, stressing that the integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system is at stake whenever high-profile figures face serious criminal accusations. Some women’s rights advocates have also highlighted the importance of safeguarding the identity and welfare of minors involved in criminal proceedings.

The matter is now scheduled for substantive trial, with the next hearing set after the prosecution completes its preparations and responses to bail conditions. Meanwhile, activists and observers continue to monitor the case closely, underscoring its significance in Nigeria’s broader struggle over sexual violence, political power and the rule of law.
