A U.S. Congressman, Randy Fine — representing Florida’s 6th District — has added his name to a growing roster of members of Congress demanding urgent American action on what they describe as “religiously-targeted killings” in Nigeria, accusing the Nigerian government of failing to protect its Christian citizens.
Fine, in a statement shared on social media, described the ongoing violence against Christian communities as “appalling” and criticised what he called “the deafening silence” of Nigerian authorities. He endorsed a resolution sponsored by Chris Smith that seeks to codify a U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious-freedom violations and to apply diplomatic and economic pressure on Abuja.
The resolution could pave the way for targeted sanctions, visa bans, or restrictions on U.S. aid to Nigerian officials deemed responsible for, or complicit in, abuses against religious minorities.
Nigerian authorities have repeatedly rejected the “genocide” label, arguing that Nigeria’s security crisis is driven by terrorism, banditry and criminality not religious persecution.
With Randy Fine’s backing, pressure in Congress appears to be building, even as the FG and key regional stakeholders brace for diplomatic and political fallout.
