Operatives attached to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit have been accused of attempting to cover up the murder of a teenage boy in Enugu State, following allegations that key suspects in the case offered bribes to compromise the investigation.
According to an investigation reported by SaharaReporters, the teenager was allegedly killed under circumstances that initially drew public outrage and demands for accountability. However, sources familiar with the case claimed that officers from the IGP Monitoring Unit later intervened in a manner aimed at shielding the suspects from prosecution, after money reportedly changed hands.
The sources alleged that rather than pursuing a thorough and transparent investigation, the officers sought to manipulate case files, alter statements and weaken evidence, effectively undermining efforts to secure justice for the slain teenager. Family members of the victim were said to have raised alarm after noticing sudden changes in the handling of the case.
Community sources told Dalena Reporters that the suspects, who were previously detained, were treated with unusual leniency after the alleged bribe was paid, fueling suspicions of official complicity. The alleged actions of the monitoring unit officers have sparked anger among residents and civil society groups, who view the development as another example of entrenched corruption within law enforcement.
Human rights advocates condemned the alleged plot, describing it as a grave abuse of power and a direct assault on the rule of law. They warned that allowing such conduct to go unpunished would deepen public distrust in the Nigeria Police Force and further entrench a culture of impunity.
