The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dismissed reports alleging that a Nigerian military aircraft was detained in Burkina Faso after being forced to land for espionage activities, describing the claims as false, misleading and capable of undermining regional security cooperation.
In a statement reacting to the reports, the NAF clarified that no Nigerian military aircraft is being held in Burkina Faso for spying or any unauthorised operation. The Air Force said the narrative circulating in some quarters was a deliberate distortion of facts, urging the public to disregard the speculation.
According to the NAF, the aircraft in question was on a legitimate operational mission, conducted in line with established protocols and bilateral arrangements common among countries in the West African sub‑region. It stressed that Nigerian military air operations comply strictly with international aviation standards and regional agreements.
The Air Force explained that operational flights involving refuelling stops, technical landings or joint security coordination should not be misconstrued as hostile or covert actions. It added that Nigeria maintains cordial military‑to‑military relations with Burkina Faso and other neighbouring countries, particularly in the collective fight against terrorism and transnational crime.
NAF authorities warned that the spread of unverified information concerning military operations could damage diplomatic relations and compromise ongoing security efforts across the Sahel and West Africa, where collaboration remains critical amid rising insecurity.
“The Nigerian Air Force conducts its operations transparently and professionally. Any claim suggesting espionage or detention of our aircraft is entirely unfounded,” the statement said.
Security analysts note that rumours surrounding military movements have become increasingly common amid heightened regional tensions and misinformation campaigns, making official clarification essential to maintaining public confidence and inter‑state trust.
The Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity while sustaining cooperation with regional partners to counter insurgency, banditry and other cross‑border threats.
The NAF urged media organisations and the public to rely on verified official sources for information relating to national security matters, warning that sensational reporting could have unintended consequences.
As Nigeria continues to deepen defence collaboration with neighbouring states, the Air Force said it remains focused on professionalism, transparency and regional stability.
