Kenya Issues Advisory to Its Citizens in Tanzania Ahead of Possible December 9 Protests

Dar es Salaam / Nairobi — December 6, 2025 | Dalena Reporters

The Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam has issued a formal security alert to Kenyan nationals living in Tanzania, warning them of possible unrest surrounding planned demonstrations on December 9 — Tanzania’s Independence Day.

In the advisory, the High Commission urged Kenyans to “shelter in place,” avoid protest zones, large gatherings, and security checkpoints stressing that “the situation can change rapidly. Citizens were also advised to secure essential supplies (food, water, medications), keep communication lines open, and avoid reliance on unverified social-media reports.

The alert follows a crackdown by the Tanzania Police Force, which earlier declared that any December 9 protests would be “unlawful” and warned that organisers could face arrest.

While the advisory expresses hope that Independence Day celebrations will pass peacefully, it acknowledges the possibility of disruption including curfews, communications blackouts and mobility restrictions and urges Kenyans to stay vigilant and comply with local law and guidance.
