Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for a return to compassionate, accountable governance in Nigeria, condemning what he described as frivolous and insensitive actions by the political class even as ordinary citizens continue to suffer.
In a post titled “A Pain One Carries Silently” on his verified social-media account, Obi said the scale of human suffering — from insecurity, hunger, and economic hardship — stands in sharp contrast to the “reckless insensitivity” displayed by some leaders. He cited recent appointments to ambassadorial positions and a celebratory dinner hosted by the First Lady for senators as examples of moral disconnect.
Obi argued that a nation bleeds when its leaders insulate themselves from the daily pain of its citizens and instead prioritise self-interest and spectacle. He wrote: “When our people are being killed, our leaders are busy hosting dinners. When children are being snatched from their schools, the political class is celebrating … This is not governance, this is not leadership.”
He called on young Nigerians not to lose hope, urging them to demand leadership rooted in compassion, competence and accountability — and to reject the normalisation of moral decay and indifference. “A New Nigeria we dream of — a just, secure, productive and respected nation — is still possible,” he declared, adding that real change will come only if citizens refuse to accept failure as destiny.
Obi’s remarks come amid growing public discontent over economic hardship, insecurity, and the perception that the political elite remain disconnected from the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians. His message reinforces earlier calls for reform-based governance and transparent leadership, which he has repeatedly said are essential to breaking Nigeria’s cycles of poverty, instability and misgovernance.
