AIR TRANSAT PILOT STRIKE LOOMS — Flights Cancelled as Contract Talks Hit Impasse

Canada’s Air Transat is facing major disruption as its pilots represented by Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) prepare to strike after issuing a 72-hour notice that could take effect as early as 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, December 10.

The strike threat follows months of tense negotiations over a new contract. Last week, 99 % of eligible pilots voted in favour of a strike mandate if management failed to deliver what they describe as a “modern contract” with fair pay, benefits, and work conditions.

In response, Air Transat announced the cancellation of a second wave of international flights including routes from Toronto (YYZ) and Montréal (YUL) to destinations such as Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Cancún (Mexico), Paris (France), Lisbon (Portugal), London (UK), Málaga (Spain), and Lima (Peru).

The airline has also launched a “special program” to repatriate travellers and offer flexibility giving customers the option to rebook or receive a refund if their flights are cancelled.

ALPA warns that, barring a last-minute agreement, all operations could be suspended potentially stranding travellers during the busy holiday period. “We owe it to our passengers and pilots to reach a deal,” the union said, calling on management to offer a contract that matches industry standards.

✅ What travellers should know now

  • Flights scheduled for December 9 and beyond may be cancelled — especially long-haul international services.
  • Affected passengers are advised to check the status of their flight or contact the airline directly.
  • Air Transat offers refunds or rebooking without penalty for cancelled flights; travellers may also consider booking alternate flights ahead of the strike deadline.
  • If you have upcoming travel with Air Transat, it’s wise to be flexible, monitor communications, and prepare contingencies.
