Military–Police Clash in Onitsha: Soldiers Open Fire on Policemen After Anambra Election

In the aftermath of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)-supervised governorship election in Anambra State, a grave security incident has occurred along the Onitsha road corridor: soldiers from the Nigerian Army allegedly opened fire on policemen returning from election-duty.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the confrontation began when policemen—who had been deployed as election security personnel—were stopped at a military checkpoint. According to one officer, a disagreement erupted between the troops and the police. The situation escalated quickly and resulted in gunfire.

“Before we know what was going on, they opened fire on us. One of us was shot directly on his chest with many other policemen injured,” a policeman told DalenaReporters.

The incident reportedly provoked a riotous reaction among the injured police officers and supporting personnel at the scene. They called for backup and reinforcements as the situation spiralled.

Officials had earlier disclosed that some 45,000 police personnel were deployed for the election in Anambra State. This mass mobilization underscores the scale of security involvement in the electoral process.

At this time, no official statement has been released by senior military or police command affirming the details of the confrontation, the number of casualties, or whether any soldiers have been detained or disciplined.
