KADUNA — In a tragic development that has deepened anxiety over the security situation in Nigeria’s Northwest, Venerable Edwin Achi — a clergyman of Anglican Diocese of Kaduna — has died while being held by kidnappers. The priest had been abducted, along with his wife and daughter, on October 28, 2025 from their home in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, near the Kaduna Refinery.
According to a statement issued by the Diocese and confirmed by regional Christian-community leaders, “with heavy hearts and deep sorrow,” the church announced the passing of Achi, describing his death in captivity as a “painful loss” to the entire Diocese, the clergy and all who benefited from his ministry. The Diocese also cancelled its planned “Stand Up For Jesus 2025” programme as a mark of respect.
The circumstances surrounding Achi’s death remain unclear. The kidnappers originally demanded a ransom of ₦600 million for the release of the priest along with his wife, identified as Sarah Achi, and their daughter. In proof-of-life photos sent to the family after abduction, they appeared distressed and weak, with other captives reportedly chained and visibly malnourished.
While Achi’s death has now been officially confirmed, both his wife and daughter remain in the hands of the kidnappers. The Diocese and human-rights organisations continue to appeal for their immediate release and for urgent action by security agencies to rescue them.
The killing of a respected religious leader in captivity underscores the alarming deterioration of security in Kaduna State, where abductions of clerics, congregants and civilians have surged in recent months. The incident has reignited demands for more decisive government action — including improved protection for vulnerable communities, swift rescue operations for kidnapped victims, and comprehensive plans to dismantle the networks behind such attacks.
Dalena Reporters will continue to monitor developments, especially efforts to secure the release of Achi’s surviving family members and to bring perpetrators to justice.
