Islamic Cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi Urges President Bola Tinubu’s Government to Cut Ties With the U.S. Over Donald Trump’s Threat

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged President Tinubu’s government to take decisive diplomatic action against the United States following remarks attributed to President Trump threatening military intervention in Nigeria.

In his Sunday statement, Gumi described Trump’s threat as a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty, and called on the Federal Government to summon the U.S. ambassador for an official retraction of the comments. He added that, failing the retraction, Nigeria should consider severing diplomatic ties with the “irresponsible regime.

Gumi emphasised that Nigeria is no longer beholden to any single foreign power, stating: “The world is no longer unipolar. Nigeria has friends elsewhere who respect our sovereignty.” He suggested that Nigeria has alternative economic and military partnerships available and must not remain dependent on one ally.

The cleric’s remarks come amid soaring diplomatic tension between Nigeria and the U.S., following the latter’s indication of potential military action if Nigeria fails to protect Christian communities from alleged mass killings. Gumi, known for advocating dialogue with armed groups in Nigeria, drew a parallel to peace processes with militants in the Niger Delta, urging security agencies to channel efforts into peaceful resolutions.

His statement makes the cleric one of the prominent voices urging a shift in Nigeria’s foreign-policy posture — from reactive alignment to a more diversified, sovereign stance. As diplomatic dynamics evolve, all eyes will be on how President Tinubu’s administration balances security cooperation with U.S. partners against growing calls for independent strategic decision-making.
