KEBBI STATE — In a brutal late-night ambush, gunmen believed to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group attacked a border checkpoint of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Bakin Ruwa, Bagudu Local Government Area, killing three officers and destroying the checkpoint vehicle and shelter.
Sources told media outlets the assailants struck around midnight, opening fire without warning on officers manning the Maje border checkpoint. Eyewitnesses say the attackers then set the operational NIS vehicle ablaze and torched the checkpoint structure before fleeing into nearby bushland.
The state police public relations officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, confirmed the incident, but described the details as “sketchy” as investigations begin. At the time of reporting, the NIS in Kebbi had yet to release an official statement.
Border communities have been thrown into panic as the attack adds to a rising wave of violence blamed on the Lakurawa group. Security analysts warn that the incident underscores critical vulnerabilities along border and rural checkpoints that have repeatedly been targeted in recent weeks.
Residents of Bagudu LGA, many now sleeping in fear, are calling on the federal and state governments to deploy reinforcements including mobile policing units and community-based vigilance networks to restore a sense of security and prevent further loss of life. Dalena Reporters will continue to follow developments and report on the manhunt and official security response.
