The National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Extra‑Judicial Killings, Mob Actions and Impunity (NCAMKI) has called for urgent legal action following the fatal shooting of six traders at the Owode Onirin Spare‑Parts Market in Lagos, allegedly by police officers from Nasarawa State.
In a statement released Wednesday, the coalition described the incident as “a moral disgrace” and warned that unchecked acts of violence by state agents are eroding public trust in Nigeria’s law-enforcement institutions.
According to NCAMKI, the identities of the officers implicated in the shootings are known, yet none have been prosecuted; some, the group alleges, have even been released without charge.
The coalition’s demands include:
-
The immediate re-arrest and prosecution of the officers involved.
-
The establishment of an independent commission of inquiry involving civil society, legal experts and human-rights groups.
-
Compensation and psychological support for the families of the deceased traders.
-
Suspension or prosecution of senior police officers who may have supervised or condoned the killings.
NCAMKI further urged the Nigerian Police Force Inspector-General, Lagos State Governor and the State Attorney-General to act decisively. The group warned that the scheduled court mention on November 13, 2025 must not become “a stalling tactic.
Earlier investigations by rights groups suggested that the six men, listed by names in media reports, were legitimate traders at the market and had been protesting alleged harassment and illegal demolitions of their shops when the shooting occurred.
As grieving families await justice, NCAMKI described the event as indicative of deeper structural failures within Nigeria’s security agencies and pledged that their silence will not continue.
