In a dramatic moment on the floor of the House of Representatives, a member of parliament — Alhassan Doguwa — called for the immediate suspension of all legislative activities, urging colleagues to “shut this House down” until the administration of Bola Tinubu takes decisive steps to tackle escalating insecurity across the country.

Doguwa, who represents the Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency, addressed the plenary on Tuesday, lamenting that “the country is running in blood and tears,” noting that insecurity is preventing everyday Nigerians — from farmers to traders to worshippers — from carrying out basic daily tasks. Farmers cannot go to farm; traders cannot go to market; worshippers cannot attend mosques or churches. “Then what are you legislating here?” he demanded.

He argued that when citizens cannot live in safety, the business of lawmaking is rendered meaningless. “If the government is not prepared to actually do the right thing that will protect the lives and property of our people,” he said, urging the House leadership to declare a legislative emergency and suspend sittings until meaningful security action is taken.

Doguwa also reminded his colleagues that under the constitution, security is the responsibility of the federal government — with states carrying ancillary obligations — and stressed that the insecurity now affects virtually every part of Nigeria, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or party allegiance. He cited recent kidnappings and violent attacks in his own constituency near the Falgore Game Reserve as evidence of a deteriorating nationwide security situation.

The lawmaker’s remarks — captured in a video widely circulated on social media — have renewed pressure on the federal government and ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC) to urgently address the security crisis, as public outcry grows over continuing violence that threatens not just lives, but the stability of daily life across Nigeria.

Dalena Reporters will continue to follow reactions from national leadership and security agencies to determine whether this call for a suspension of legislative business will spur concrete action.
