Ex- Nigerian Minister Chris Ngige Recounts Attack on Convoy — Says Gunmen Wore Police and Army Uniforms

Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has revealed chilling details of a deadly ambush on his convoy along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack which occurred on Wednesday, November 27, 2025 — was carried out by heavily armed men disguised in police and army uniforms, Ngige said, warning that the brazen impersonation signals a grave security threat.

Ngige told journalists that although he was not traveling with the convoy when the incident took place, some of his aides and a police escort were returning from errands when gunmen in uniform opened fire, killing a woman who was filming the unfolding attack and injuring a police officer assigned to the lead vehicle. The assailants reportedly seized the officer’s service rifle and uniform after shooting him.

Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene: the pilot vehicle sustaining heavy gunfire, bullets piercing the car, and terrified residents fleeing as the attackers unleashed indiscriminate shots. A shop owner who rushed to the scene was also shot — though he has since been stabilized and scheduled for surgery. Meanwhile, the police escort leader is said to have undergone successful surgery.

In a statement released after the attack, Ngige’s former media aide confirmed the grim toll: one civilian was killed, the policeman wounded, and a shop owner wounded. The assailants escaped with the stolen police uniform and rifle, leaving behind a bullet-riddled vehicle. The State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

Addressing the incident, Ngige described it not as a personal assassination attempt, but as symptomatic of a worsening security landscape: “They attacked my convoy while returning from a mechanic workshop; they ambushed them, stripped off uniforms, took the gun — this group seems to be targeting security personnel and hijacking their arms.

He appealed to the state government and security agencies to intensify patrols and ensure that law-abiding citizens can travel safely — especially with the festive season approaching and increased movement across the state. His remarks echoed concerns from residents who described the ambush as a chilling indicator that criminals are now operating with impunity, using official uniforms to carry out deadly attacks.

The attack has reignited public debate over the rise of uniformed impersonation by criminal elements across Nigeria, a trend security analysts warn could further undermine public trust in law enforcement and amplify the scope of violent crime. Dalena Reporters will continue to monitor the police manhunt and report any breakthroughs, as well as implications for state-wide security ahead of the holiday season.
