A devastating car explosion ripped through a densely populated district near the 17th-century Red Fort in India’s capital late on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring around 20 others, officials said. The blast occurred at about 6:55 p.m. local time (13:30 GMT) when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light near the Red Fort metro station and suddenly exploded, damaging several nearby cars and auto-rickshaws and igniting multiple fires.
Emergency crews found at least six vehicles and three auto-rickshaws ablaze; residents reported the shock-wave from the explosion shattered windows and threw debris across a busy street. New Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed “an explosion happened in that vehicle, and due to the explosion nearby vehicles were also damaged.” Authorities have already arrested the registered owner of the car involved, broadcaster NDTV reported.
The cause remains under investigation; officials said no angle has been ruled out. Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited the scene, stated the probe would be “thorough” and “all possibilities will be examined.” The explosion triggered a nationwide high-alert: security agencies placed major transport hubs and government buildings across several states on watch.
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and key symbol of Indian independence, lies in the crowded Old Delhi zone and is typically surrounded by heavy foot and vehicle traffic. Families of the deceased and the injured are being assisted by local authorities; forensic units have already begun collecting evidence, analysing CCTV footage and vehicle remains. The investigation is likely to involve India’s federal investigative agency given the scale and location of the blast.
