WASHINGTON, October 29. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump announced his intention to reduce the additional tariffs on Chinese imports imposed due to fentanyl smuggling following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"I expect us to lower [tariffs] because I believe they will help us with the fentanyl situation," Trump said in response to a question on the matter while speaking to reporters on board his plane en route from Japan to the Republic of Korea. The meeting between US and Chinese leaders is scheduled for October 30 on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.
The American leader added that he was optimistic and looked forward to "an excellent meeting with the Chinese president," which "will resolve many issues." "I'm aware of what's going on; we're in talks with them," he noted. "We have very good relations with China. I think we'll achieve a very good outcome [from the meeting] for the country and for the entire world."
Talks between Xi Jinping and Trump are expected to take place on October 30 in Busan on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Trump previously stated that he hopes to reach a "fair agreement" on further bilateral trade terms at this meeting. He also noted that he plans to address issues of cooperation with Russia and the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the prospects for China's involvement in the nuclear arms reduction process.
