Tinubu Govt Cancels 65th Independence Day Parade, Vows Other Celebrations Will Proceed

In a surprise announcement, the Federal Government has canceled the traditional Independence Day parade that was set to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1.

The declaration signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation  gave no specific reason for the cancellation. The statement emphasized that the decision “is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary” and affirmed that all other scheduled anniversary activities will continue as planned.

Among the events still slated to hold are the presidential broadcast, cultural performances, and the finale of the National Campus Debate.  The government also expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the change and urged Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and guests to support its “Renewed Hope” agenda.

In Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume offered remarks emphasizing that Independence Day remains a moment for sober reflection, unity, and renewed patriotism. He acknowledged economic challenges facing citizens but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stabilizing the economy and pursuing structural reforms.

The government’s abrupt decision has already drawn public speculation, with some commentators calling for transparency about the rationale behind canceling what has long been a marquee symbol of national pride.
