U.S. President Donald Trump has issued what he described as a “last warning” to Hamas, urging the group to accept a U.S.-backed ceasefire and hostage release deal or face even greater consequences. The ultimatum, delivered late Sunday, marks Washington’s most forceful intervention yet in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Speaking from the White House, Trump said that Hamas must agree to the terms of the proposal, which calls for the release of all remaining hostages in Gaza in exchange for a phased ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, and the possibility of reconstruction assistance. “This is the final opportunity,” Trump declared. “If Hamas refuses, the consequences will be severe, and they will bear full responsibility for what comes next.”
In a surprise response, Hamas officials said the group was open to restarting negotiations, signaling a potential breakthrough after months of stalled diplomacy. A senior Hamas spokesperson confirmed that the organization is willing to “engage constructively” with mediators from Egypt and Qatar to explore the U.S.-backed plan, though he emphasized that any agreement must guarantee the protection of Palestinian civilians and a full lifting of Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
The proposal has gained strong support from Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirming that Israel had already agreed in principle to the framework. Israeli officials stressed that the deal would provide a path to secure the release of hostages while preserving Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas aggression.
The announcement comes amid growing international pressure to end the conflict, which has devastated Gaza’s civilian population and strained regional stability. The United Nations has warned of mass famine conditions in Gaza, while humanitarian organizations report widespread shortages of food, medicine, and shelter. Global leaders have urged both sides to prioritize the protection of civilians and embrace diplomacy over further escalation.
While optimism remains cautious, Trump’s warning and Hamas’s readiness to resume talks may mark a pivotal moment in the months-long war. Analysts say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the two sides move closer to an agreement—or whether the violence continues to spiral.
