Abuja, Nigeria – The United States government has addressed growing concerns over recent changes to visa policies affecting Nigerian citizens, stating that the decision is rooted in technical and security-related reviews—not politics or international diplomatic tensions.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria released an official statement on Thursday, confirming that the reduced visa validity period for Nigerian applicants is part of a global reassessment aimed at aligning entry protocols with emerging security requirements.
“This decision has nothing to do with Nigeria’s participation in BRICS or recent deportation policy discussions,” said a spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. “Visa policy changes are based on internal reviews, not political retaliation.”
The clarification comes amid speculation on social media and in the press that the U.S. might be reacting to Nigeria’s growing alignment with the BRICS bloc—a coalition of major emerging economies—or the country's refusal to accept deported Venezuelan migrants from U.S. detention centers.
In recent weeks, Nigerian travelers have reported shorter visa durations and stricter entry requirements, prompting frustration and confusion among students, business travelers, and families with ties to the U.S.
“It’s disappointing. I was planning to visit my children in Atlanta, but now I have to reapply in just six months,” said Mrs. Ifeoma Ndukwe, a 63-year-old retiree from Enugu.
The U.S. Mission insists that the move is part of a broader global effort to harmonize visa reciprocity, ensure national security, and respond to emerging technological threats, such as passport fraud and identity theft.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government says it is in dialogue with U.S. authorities to understand the full scope of the changes and to advocate for fair treatment of its citizens.
“We are committed to protecting our nationals’ rights abroad and ensuring that bilateral relations remain strong,” said Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar.
As discussions continue, both sides have reiterated their commitment to mutual cooperation on immigration, security, and trade.
For now, Nigerians planning to travel to the United States are advised to review the latest visa requirements, consult the U.S. Embassy website, and plan applications well in advance.
