Daura, Katsina State | July 15, 2025
Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82.
According to official reports, Buhari died while receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history, as he was both a former military ruler (1983–1985) and a democratically elected president (2015–2023).
State Burial and National Mourning
Buhari’s remains have been flown back to his hometown Daura, Katsina State, where his burial is scheduled for today, following Islamic rites.
In honour of his legacy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a one-day public holiday and announced a state burial ceremony, currently underway in Daura. An inter-ministerial committee has been set up to oversee the arrangements.
A Life of Service
Born on December 17, 1942, Muhammadu Buhari rose to national prominence as a military general and later transitioned into politics, winning the presidential elections in 2015 and again in 2019. His leadership was marked by a fierce anti-corruption stance, infrastructure development, and security challenges, particularly in the fight against Boko Haram.
Though his tenure was met with both praise and criticism, Buhari remained a central figure in Nigeria’s modern political landscape.
Nationwide Reactions
Across the country, tributes have been pouring in from political leaders, citizens, and the international community. Flags are flying at half-staff, and thousands are expected to attend the funeral ceremonies in Daura today.
Legacy and Reflection
As Nigeria bids farewell to Muhammadu Buhari, citizens reflect on his decades of public service and his role in shaping the nation’s political evolution. His passing leaves behind a mixed legacy, but also an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history.
