Edo State, Nigeria – July 20, 2025
On July 10, tragedy struck a Catholic seminary in Edo State, when armed kidnappers stormed the premises, killing a security guard and abducting three seminarians.
According to reports from local church officials, the attack occurred late at night when unknown gunmen broke into the seminary compound. The guard on duty was shot and killed while attempting to protect the students.
The kidnapped seminarians are reportedly theology students preparing for priesthood. Their identities have not been publicly released for security reasons. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Christian community and the broader public.
A Surge in Targeted Abductions
This attack is part of a disturbing rise in abductions targeting Christian institutions in Nigeria, especially in the country’s southern and Middle Belt regions. Churches, seminaries, and Christian schools have increasingly become targets for ransom-driven kidnappings and religious persecution.
The Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia, condemned the attack, saying:
"This is an assault on the church and on humanity. We pray for the safe return of the abducted seminarians and call on the government to act swiftly."
Security Concerns Mount
Edo State authorities have launched an investigation, but residents and church leaders are calling for immediate action to prevent further violence against religious communities. Families of the abducted students are reportedly in shock, pleading for prayers and support.
This incident underscores Nigeria’s growing security crisis, where religious leaders, students, and worshippers are increasingly vulnerable.
