British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after authorities determined that he had overstayed his visa and was subject to a final order of removal from the United States.
Yiannopoulos, 41, was arrested on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement records and the Department of Homeland Security. He is expected to remain in ICE custody while authorities proceed with his removal from the country.
The detention has attracted particular attention because Yiannopoulos has spent years publicly advocating some of the toughest immigration enforcement measures in the United States. He has previously called for ICE checkpoints at supermarkets and argued that people unable to prove their legal U.S. residency should face immediate deportation.
The Department of Homeland Security said Yiannopoulos legally entered the United States through New York City in May 2019 but subsequently remained in the country beyond the period permitted under his immigration status. DHS said he had been issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge on July 22 after failing to appear for his scheduled immigration hearing.
“Yiannopoulos was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge on July 22, after failing to show up for his immigration hearing,” DHS said in its statement, according to Reuters.
The agency described him as a British national who had violated U.S. immigration law by overstaying his authorized period of stay. He is now being held pending deportation, although Reuters reported that it was not immediately clear whether he had obtained legal representation or intended to challenge the removal order.
Yiannopoulos rose to international prominence through his provocative political commentary and his association with the American far right. He became widely known through his work with Breitbart News and his involvement in the online culture surrounding the 2014 Gamergate controversy.
His political career and public profile have been marked by repeated controversies over statements concerning race, gender, immigration and other social issues. He became a prominent supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and was closely associated with the broader populist movement that emerged around Trump's first presidential victory.
His relationship with Trump and other prominent figures on the American right later became more complicated. Yiannopoulos eventually became critical of Trump and distanced himself from some of the political figures with whom he had previously worked.
He also developed close ties with rapper and political figure Kanye West, now known as Ye. Yiannopoulos worked with West on political activities and was involved in the controversial political circle surrounding West during the early 2020s.
Yiannopoulos was also associated with white nationalist commentator Nick Fuentes and other figures on the far right, further contributing to his reputation as one of the most controversial political personalities to emerge from the online conservative movement.
His detention by an agency whose powers he has publicly supported has created an unusual contrast between his political advocacy and his current immigration circumstances.
Yiannopoulos has previously argued for aggressive enforcement against people living in the United States without lawful immigration status. His calls for widespread ICE enforcement included proposals for immigration checkpoints in ordinary public places and rapid removal of people who could not demonstrate that they were legally entitled to remain in the country.
The Department of Homeland Security's decision to detain him therefore comes against the backdrop of his own longstanding support for strict immigration enforcement.
Under U.S. immigration law, an individual who receives a final order of removal can be detained while the government arranges deportation. Yiannopoulos' case is now expected to proceed through the immigration enforcement system unless a legal challenge or other development changes the situation.
The circumstances surrounding his presence in New Orleans were not immediately clear. Reuters reported that he was arrested at the city's international airport on Thursday, but authorities did not provide additional details about where he had been travelling from or where he intended to go.
His detention also comes as the Trump administration has significantly intensified immigration enforcement across the United States. ICE has expanded operations targeting people accused of violating immigration laws, while the administration has repeatedly emphasized deportation as a central component of its immigration policy.
The case illustrates that immigration enforcement can affect individuals who have publicly supported strict immigration policies themselves. Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally in 2019, but according to federal authorities, his subsequent failure to comply with immigration requirements ultimately resulted in a final removal order.
For now, Yiannopoulos remains in federal immigration custody awaiting removal proceedings. Neither he nor a confirmed legal representative had publicly provided a detailed response to the detention by the time of the Reuters report.
His arrest is likely to attract continued attention because of his long history as a provocative political commentator, his previous support for aggressive immigration enforcement and his associations with prominent figures in America's far-right political and media landscape.
