TAL, West Bank — Israeli forces detained dozens of Palestinians on Saturday during a large-scale security operation in the occupied West Bank village of Tal, following a deadly confrontation involving armed Israeli settlers that left four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers dead. The incident has further heightened tensions in the region amid a surge in violence between Israeli settlers and Palestinian communities.
According to the Israeli military, troops entered the village overnight and conducted extensive searches after Friday's deadly clash. The military said it questioned approximately 80 residents, arrested 11 suspects in Tal, and carried out additional arrests elsewhere in the West Bank as part of what it described as a counterterrorism operation.
The confrontation began on Friday when a group of armed Israeli settlers entered the area near Tal, southwest of Nablus. Palestinian officials said the settlers attempted to attack the village, prompting local residents to confront them. The situation quickly escalated into a deadly exchange of gunfire involving settlers, Palestinians, and Israeli security forces.
Israeli authorities initially described those involved as hikers but later acknowledged that the civilians were armed. During the confrontation, four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed. Israeli officials said one Palestinian allegedly seized a weapon during the clash and opened fire, though Palestinian authorities dispute Israel's version of events.
Following the violence, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a broad security response. His office announced measures including the demolition of the home of a Palestinian accused of involvement in the attack and the acceleration of settlement construction in the West Bank.
Residents of Tal reported that Israeli soldiers entered homes throughout the village, conducting searches and questioning dozens of people. Palestinian witnesses said many villagers were detained for hours before some were released, while others remained in custody pending further investigation.
The Israeli military said the operation was aimed at preventing additional violence and locating individuals connected to the deadly confrontation. Officials stated that troops also conducted raids in other parts of the occupied West Bank targeting suspected members of militant groups and individuals allegedly involved in arms trafficking.
The incident has drawn renewed attention to the growing violence involving Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. According to United Nations data cited by Reuters, attacks by settlers on Palestinian communities have increased significantly in recent months, contributing to worsening security conditions across the territory.
Palestinian officials condemned the military operation, accusing Israeli forces of collectively punishing residents instead of protecting civilians from settler violence. They argued that armed settlers have increasingly entered Palestinian villages with little accountability, further fueling unrest.
Israeli officials, meanwhile, defended the operation as a necessary response to what they described as a terrorist attack that resulted in the deaths of Israeli soldiers. The military said it would continue operations in the area to prevent further attacks and maintain security.
The violence comes amid already heightened tensions across the occupied West Bank, where military raids, settler attacks, and clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians have intensified throughout the year. International observers have repeatedly warned that the deteriorating security situation risks triggering a broader escalation of the conflict.
As investigations continue, both Israeli and Palestinian authorities have offered sharply different accounts of how the confrontation began. The latest bloodshed underscores the deep divisions and ongoing instability in the occupied West Bank, where competing narratives and recurring violence continue to complicate efforts toward a lasting resolution.
