DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran announced on Thursday that it had launched missile attacks targeting U.S. military bases in Kuwait and Jordan, saying the strikes were carried out in response to a new wave of American military operations against Iranian infrastructure. The developments mark another sharp escalation in the growing confrontation between Washington and Tehran, heightening fears of a broader regional conflict.
Iran's state media reported that the country's armed forces launched what they described as a "proportionate response" after the United States conducted additional strikes against Iranian targets overnight. Iranian officials accused Washington of violating the country's sovereignty and warned that further U.S. military action would prompt additional retaliation.
U.S. officials acknowledged that American military installations in Kuwait and Jordan were placed on high alert following reports of incoming missiles. According to preliminary assessments, air defense systems intercepted several projectiles, while military authorities continued evaluating the extent of any damage. At the time of reporting, U.S. officials had not confirmed significant casualties resulting from the attacks.
The latest exchange follows weeks of escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran, including U.S. airstrikes on Iranian military and strategic facilities, increased sanctions, and heightened military deployments across the Middle East. Washington has maintained that its actions are intended to deter further attacks on U.S. personnel and allies while limiting Iran's military capabilities.
Iran, meanwhile, insists its military responses are defensive and says it will continue to retaliate if American forces strike additional targets inside the country. Senior Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that U.S. military assets throughout the Middle East could become targets if the conflict continues to escalate.
Regional governments have reacted with growing concern. Kuwait and Jordan have increased security around key military and civilian infrastructure while monitoring developments closely. Both countries host U.S. military personnel and have emphasized the importance of maintaining regional stability amid rising tensions.
The renewed confrontation has also intensified concerns about international shipping and global energy markets. Military analysts warn that continued hostilities could threaten major maritime routes in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, potentially disrupting global trade and energy supplies if the conflict expands further.
The United Nations and several world leaders have urged both sides to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions to avoid a wider regional war. International organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, warning that further military escalation could have significant humanitarian, economic, and geopolitical consequences.
Defense experts note that while both Iran and the United States have demonstrated military capability, neither side has publicly indicated a desire for a prolonged conventional war. However, the rapid cycle of attacks and counterattacks has increased the risk of miscalculation that could draw additional countries into the conflict.
As military forces across the Middle East remain on heightened alert, diplomatic channels continue to operate behind the scenes in an effort to prevent further escalation. The coming days are expected to be critical as governments assess the latest developments and determine whether the confrontation can be contained or risks expanding into a broader regional crisis.
