LIBREVILLE, Gabon — Lawyers representing Gabon's main opposition leader, Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, have accused the government of imprisoning him for political reasons, arguing that authorities revived an 18-year-old private financial dispute to silence one of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema's most prominent critics. The allegations have intensified concerns about political freedoms in the Central African nation.
Bilie-By-Nze, a former prime minister under ex-President Ali Bongo Ondimba, has been held in detention for more than three months after his arrest in April. His legal team says the charges are unrelated to any recent criminal conduct and instead stem from a long-resolved private financial matter dating back nearly two decades.
According to his lawyers, the case is being used as a political tool to remove a key opposition figure from the public stage following Gabon's transition to a new government. They argue that the prosecution lacks legal merit and is intended to weaken democratic opposition in the country.
