Several supporters from Ivory Coast have reportedly been denied entry visas to the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, disrupting planned travel arrangements and raising fresh concerns over access restrictions during one of the world’s largest sporting events.
According to officials connected to the country’s organized supporters’ network, hundreds of fans had been preparing to travel to support the national team during group-stage matches scheduled across North America. However, many of those plans were cancelled after visa applications were unsuccessful.
Julien Kouadio Adonis, president of the National Committee of Elephants Supporters (CNSE), said the decision had created disappointment among supporters who had expected to attend and represent their country during the tournament. Reports indicated that approximately 500 supporters had initially planned to travel, although organizers estimate that larger numbers of Ivorian supporters already living abroad could still attend matches.
The development comes amid wider debate surrounding visa access and entry policies connected to the World Cup, which is being hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Several reports have highlighted difficulties experienced by supporters, media representatives, and sports personnel from different countries attempting to enter the United States during the competition period.
U.S. authorities have maintained that visa decisions are made individually and are subject to security screening and immigration requirements. Government officials have defended the vetting process as necessary to protect national security while facilitating legitimate international travel connected to the tournament.
The issue has generated broader discussion about balancing border policies with the inclusive spirit traditionally associated with international sporting events. Critics argue that travel barriers risk limiting fan participation and affecting the atmosphere surrounding the tournament, while supporters of the measures point to security concerns and immigration enforcement obligations.
Ivory Coast is scheduled to play multiple group-stage matches during the tournament, including fixtures in the United States and Canada. Despite the travel setbacks, supporters’ groups said they remain committed to backing the team through alternative arrangements and diaspora communities expected to attend matches.
