The Nigerian Senate has directed the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to investigate and arrest suspected bandits reportedly displaying large sums of money and conducting cash giveaways on TikTok, amid growing concerns over the use of social media platforms to project criminal influence and intimidate citizens.

The directive followed reports alleging that individuals believed to be linked to armed groups had openly showcased cash online and organised giveaway sessions that attracted public attention across social media. Lawmakers expressed concern that such activities could normalise criminal behaviour and create indirect channels for extortion and recruitment.

According to discussions referenced during Senate proceedings, one case that drew public attention involved allegations that a participant who received money during a TikTok livestream was later contacted and reportedly pressured for a much larger payment. The incident intensified calls for authorities to examine whether criminal groups are using digital platforms to expand their reach and influence.

Members of the Senate reportedly argued that allowing individuals linked to violent activities to publicly display wealth without consequences could undermine public confidence in ongoing security operations. They called for stronger monitoring of online activities connected to organised criminal networks and improved coordination between intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Security experts have increasingly warned that social media platforms can be exploited for propaganda, intimidation, and image-building by criminal actors. Nigerian authorities have previously stated that disrupting financial flows and public influence networks remains part of broader efforts to combat insecurity and banditry across affected regions.

As of the time of reporting, no official statement had been released detailing specific arrests connected to the alleged giveaway activities. However, the Senate’s resolution signals increased scrutiny of online activities believed to be linked to criminal financing and public displays of illicit wealth.
