The controversy intensified after footage emerged appearing to show officers initially treating the injured teenager as a suspect after the attacker allegedly claimed he had been assaulted in a racially motivated incident.
According to reports presented in court, the attacker, identified as 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, told police that he had been attacked before investigators later concluded that account was false. Digwa was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.
