Outrage Builds As Atiku Accuses First Lady Remi Tinubu Of Insensitivity Over Missing Schoolchildren

Date: June 5, 2026 l By Chichi Nwosu

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticised Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, over public activities held amid growing concern surrounding abducted schoolchildren and worsening insecurity in parts of the country.

Atiku’s comments followed public reactions to activities associated with the First Lady during a period of heightened anxiety over children reportedly still unaccounted for after recent abduction incidents. The former presidential candidate argued that national leaders, particularly those occupying symbolic and moral positions, should demonstrate greater sensitivity during moments of collective distress.

In a strongly worded reaction, Atiku suggested that national celebrations and ceremonial appearances should not overshadow unresolved humanitarian concerns affecting Nigerian families. He framed the issue as one of empathy and leadership responsibility, arguing that public office holders should align their actions with the emotional realities faced by citizens.

According to reports, the criticism was linked to public attention surrounding activities involving the First Lady at a time when conversations around insecurity, kidnappings and child safety continued to dominate national discourse. The remarks quickly generated reactions across social media, with supporters and critics debating whether public officials should suspend celebratory appearances during national emergencies.

The controversy has added another layer to Nigeria’s ongoing debate over leadership accountability and public perception during periods of insecurity. While supporters of Atiku viewed his comments as a call for compassion and urgency, others argued that governance and official engagements continue alongside security operations.

Neither the Presidency nor the office of the First Lady had publicly addressed Atiku’s remarks at the time of reporting.

The exchange arrives at a politically sensitive moment as opposition figures continue to intensify scrutiny of the federal government’s handling of security challenges ahead of the country’s evolving political landscape.
