KANO, NIGERIA — A grieving family in Kano State has accused officers attached to Zone 1 of the Nigeria Police Force of causing the death of their son while he was in police custody, sparking renewed concerns over allegations of abuse and accountability within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.
The parents, visibly distraught in a video that circulated online, claimed their son was in good health when police officers arrested him and took him into custody. According to the family, they were later informed that he had fallen ill while in detention, only to discover that he had died before they could see him.
The father of the deceased said his son showed no signs of illness at the time of his arrest. He recounted receiving information while at work that the young man had been taken to a hospital and subsequently died. The family alleges that police later returned the body to them without providing a satisfactory explanation for the circumstances surrounding his death.
“We saw him alive when they took him away,” the father reportedly said, insisting that authorities must explain what happened during his detention. The family has called for a transparent investigation into the incident and for those responsible, if any wrongdoing is established, to be held accountable.
The deceased’s mother, identified as Zainab, also demanded justice, stating that her son was healthy before his arrest. According to her account, she was later informed that he was unwell, but by the time she arrived, he was already dead. She appealed to government authorities and security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Video footage shared online showed family members and sympathizers gathered around the young man's body as mourning spread through the community. The incident has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the death.
Human rights advocates have long raised concerns about deaths in detention and allegations of misconduct by security personnel. They argue that prompt, transparent investigations are essential to maintaining public confidence in law enforcement institutions and ensuring justice for affected families.
As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly responded to the family's allegations. The parents are urging the Inspector-General of Police, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 1, and the Kano State Government to launch a full investigation into their son's death.
The case has intensified calls for greater accountability within the criminal justice system, with residents and civil society groups demanding answers about what transpired between the young man's arrest and the return of his body to his family.
