A coalition of Yoruba youths in Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to release detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, describing him as “the prophet of our time,” a freedom fighter, and a voice who warned Nigerians years ago about the worsening insecurity now affecting several parts of the country.
The group, speaking during a public gathering and media briefing, said Kanu’s repeated warnings about terrorism, kidnappings, killings, and violent extremism across Nigeria should no longer be ignored.
According to the youths, many of the security concerns Kanu spoke about in past broadcasts and public statements have now become visible realities across different regions of the country.
“He Saw What Was Coming”
The Yoruba youths stated that Kanu consistently warned about rising insecurity, attacks on communities, kidnappings, and the expansion of armed groups operating across Nigeria.
They argued that current violence affecting communities in northern, eastern, and parts of southern Nigeria has strengthened belief among his supporters that he foresaw the country’s growing instability long before it escalated nationally.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu spoke about these things years ago,” one youth representative said. “Today Nigerians are witnessing killings, kidnappings, fear, and insecurity everywhere. That is why many people now call him the prophet of our time.”
The group described the IPOB leader as a “freedom fighter” whose activism, they claimed, was focused on defending oppressed communities and exposing failures within Nigeria’s political and security systems.
Calls For International Attention
The youths also appealed to the international community, human rights organizations, and foreign governments to pay closer attention to Kanu’s continued detention and the wider security situation in Nigeria.
They urged the Nigerian government to pursue political dialogue and reconciliation rather than prolonged detention and legal confrontation.
According to the group, releasing Kanu could help reduce tensions and open discussions about national unity, insecurity, and restructuring.
“We are calling on the international community and the Nigerian authorities to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the group said. “He is not just speaking for the Igbo people. He has spoken about the suffering of Nigerians generally.”
Growing Insecurity And Public Frustration
Nigeria continues to battle multiple security crises, including insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, separatist tensions in the southeast, and widespread kidnapping-for-ransom operations affecting several regions.
Communities across the country have repeatedly complained about attacks on villages, highway abductions, killings of farmers, and violent raids linked to armed criminal groups and extremist organizations.
The Yoruba youths claimed that many Nigerians now feel abandoned and increasingly frustrated by what they describe as inadequate government response to insecurity.
They further alleged that extremist groups and criminal networks have expanded operations into strategic regions of the country, including economically important areas connected to oil infrastructure and trade routes.
Kanu’s Detention Remains Politically Sensitive
Nnamdi Kanu remains one of the most controversial political figures in modern Nigerian politics.
The IPOB leader is facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Nigerian government following his arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021. Federal authorities accuse him of incitement and activities threatening national security.
His supporters, however, insist that he is a political prisoner being persecuted for advocating self-determination and speaking against injustice.
The case has generated intense legal, political, and international debate, particularly following court rulings and controversies surrounding his extradition and detention conditions.
Divided National Reactions
While supporters view Kanu as a liberation figure and outspoken critic of insecurity, opponents accuse IPOB and its rhetoric of contributing to tensions in southeastern Nigeria.
Security analysts warn that Nigeria’s political climate has become increasingly polarized, with separatist agitation, ethnic mistrust, and insecurity feeding broader national instability.
A Lagos-based political analyst said the growing support for Kanu outside the southeast reflects broader frustration among some Nigerians.
“Whether people agree with him or not, there is no doubt that insecurity and distrust in government institutions are driving sympathy for figures seen as anti-establishment voices,” the analyst said.
Debate Over Nigeria’s Future Intensifies
The latest call by Yoruba youths highlights how debates around insecurity, restructuring, ethnic identity, and self-determination continue to shape Nigeria’s political landscape.
For supporters, Kanu represents resistance against injustice and government failure. For critics, he remains a divisive separatist figure whose movement has deepened tensions.
But amid worsening insecurity and growing public anger across multiple regions, one reality is becoming increasingly clear: Nigeria’s internal political and security crises are no longer confined to one ethnic group or region alone.
And as calls for Kanu’s release continue to spread beyond the southeast, the debate surrounding his detention is evolving into a larger national conversation about governance, justice, freedom of expression, and the future direction of Nigeria itself.
