The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed widespread reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to rename the country the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in northern states through constitutional amendments, describing the reports as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said there was “no truth” to the viral claims circulating online and warned Nigerians against spreading misinformation capable of creating political tension ahead of future elections.
According to the statement, the reports falsely alleged that President Tinubu intended to sponsor constitutional amendments under a supposed project called “Project True Federation,” which would allegedly change Nigeria’s name and abolish Sharia law in northern Nigeria. The Presidency firmly denied the existence of any such plan.
“The Presidency wishes to inform Nigerians and state clearly that there is no truth to the viral fake story,” Onanuga stated, adding that the reports were fabricated by “desperate politicians” attempting to create instability and division within the country.
The Presidency also emphasized that constitutional amendments in Nigeria cannot be carried out unilaterally by the president. Officials noted that any constitutional change requires approval by two-thirds majorities in both chambers of the National Assembly and endorsement by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.
Sharia law has remained a sensitive political and religious issue in Nigeria since its reintroduction into several northern states beginning in 1999. Currently, twelve northern states operate varying forms of Sharia legal systems alongside Nigeria’s secular constitutional framework.
The rumours sparked widespread reactions across Nigerian social media platforms, with some users expressing concern over the alleged proposals before the Presidency issued its official denial. Political observers say the controversy reflects growing tensions and misinformation campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Presidency insisted that President Tinubu remains focused on economic reforms, governance, and national development rather than constitutional controversies. Officials urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing politically sensitive reports online.
