NATO has declared that it is prepared to defend “every inch” of its territory after a Russian drone reportedly struck a residential building in Romania during an overnight assault near the Ukrainian border, escalating fears that the war in Ukraine could spill deeper into NATO territory.

The incident occurred in Galați, southeastern Romania, where authorities said a drone crashed into a 10-storey apartment building, injuring at least two civilians and triggering a fire. Romania’s Defence Ministry said radar systems tracked the drone entering Romanian airspace before the explosion occurred.

Following the attack, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte issued a strong warning to Moscow, stressing that the alliance remained fully committed to protecting member states against external threats.

“Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all,” Rutte said after speaking with Romanian President Nicușor Dan. “NATO stands ready to defend every inch of allied territory.

Romanian authorities described the incident as one of the most serious security breaches affecting the country since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Emergency crews evacuated residents from the damaged building while firefighters battled flames caused by the explosion.

Officials said the injured victims  reportedly a woman and a child sustained minor injuries, though the attack caused extensive damage to the upper section of the apartment complex.

In response, Romania summoned Russia’s ambassador and announced diplomatic consequences, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu condemned the incident as irresponsible and dangerous.

Russia, however, denied intentionally targeting Romanian territory. Kremlin officials claimed accusations regarding Russian drones flying into European countries were unsubstantiated, while some Russian officials suggested the drone may have been Ukrainian.

Former Russian President and current Security Council official Dmitry Medvedev further intensified tensions by warning European countries to expect more such drone incidents as long as they continue supporting Ukraine militarily.

The strike has renewed concerns about the increasing frequency of drone incursions into NATO airspace since the start of the war. Romania, which shares a long border with Ukraine, has repeatedly reported Russian drone fragments and airspace violations over the past two years.

Military analysts say the latest incident could increase pressure on NATO to strengthen anti-drone systems and air defence capabilities along its eastern flank, particularly in Romania and neighbouring countries vulnerable to spillover from the conflict.

Although NATO has stopped short of suggesting direct military retaliation, alliance leaders have warned that repeated violations of member-state territory risk provoking a broader regional confrontation.

The drone strike comes amid intensified Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and renewed fears across Europe over the possibility of accidental or deliberate escalation involving NATO countries.
