Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that he will consult widely before making any decision regarding a possible return to presidential politics ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. The former leader made the remarks on Thursday while addressing youth groups who visited his office in Abuja to urge him to contest the next presidential election.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, responded cautiously to growing calls from supporters advocating his return to frontline politics. According to reports, the youths appealed to him to contest the 2027 election, arguing that his leadership experience and national appeal could help address Nigeria’s current economic and political challenges.

Speaking during the meeting, Jonathan emphasized that presidential politics requires serious consideration and should not be treated lightly. “Presidential race is not a computer game,” the former president reportedly told the gathering while acknowledging their appeals. He added that he had “heard them loud and clear” and would engage in consultations before deciding on his political future.

The former president also used the occasion to encourage greater youth participation in Nigeria’s democratic process. He stressed the importance of patriotism, peaceful elections, and credible democratic institutions, warning that flawed electoral systems discourage capable citizens from participating in governance and politics.

Jonathan lamented the low level of voter turnout in Nigeria despite the country’s large population and youthful demographic. According to him, many Nigerians have become discouraged by recurring concerns surrounding election credibility, insecurity, and political instability. He urged young people to continue advocating for peaceful and transparent elections across the country.

The remarks have already intensified political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections, with analysts suggesting that Jonathan’s potential candidacy could significantly reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape. Nigeria’s political scene has recently witnessed internal divisions among opposition coalitions attempting to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.

Under Nigeria’s constitution, Jonathan remains eligible to contest the presidency because he completed only one elected presidential term after first assuming office following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010. Constitutional experts and political observers have repeatedly stated that the former president is legally qualified to seek office again if he chooses to run.

Jonathan’s comments come amid increasing political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition parties and growing public debate over who could emerge as a strong challenger in 2027. Several youth groups and political organizations have in recent months openly appealed to the former president to consider returning to active politics.

Although Jonathan stopped short of officially declaring his candidacy, his latest remarks are likely to fuel speculation over his political intentions in the coming months. Political analysts believe any formal decision by the former president could have a major impact on party alliances, regional political calculations, and voter dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
