Residents of a community in Enugu State have accused Nigerian soldiers of burning houses and destroying property during a military operation carried out in the area, with reports indicating that an elderly woman was among those affected by the incident. The allegations have sparked renewed concerns over the conduct of security operations in southeastern Nigeria.
According to reports by Sahara Reporters, villagers alleged that soldiers stormed the community during an operation targeting suspected armed groups and subsequently set several residential buildings ablaze. Community members claimed the operation created panic as residents fled homes to escape the violence and destruction.
Witnesses reportedly said the elderly woman affected by the incident lost her home during the operation and was left traumatized by the destruction. Residents accused security personnel of using excessive force and carrying out punitive actions that affected innocent civilians rather than only targeting criminal elements.
The Nigerian military had not officially responded to the specific allegations as of Friday, although security agencies have repeatedly defended similar operations in the Southeast as necessary measures against armed separatist groups and criminal gangs operating in forests and rural communities.
Communities across parts of southeastern Nigeria have witnessed recurring clashes involving security forces, suspected separatist fighters, and armed groups over recent years. Several operations have previously generated allegations of house burnings, arbitrary arrests, and destruction of civilian property.
Human rights organizations have frequently called for independent investigations into accusations of abuses during military raids in different parts of Nigeria. Rights advocates argue that heavy-handed operations risk worsening tensions between security agencies and local communities already affected by insecurity.
Residents of the Enugu community reportedly appealed to both the state and federal governments to investigate the incident and provide assistance to displaced families whose homes and belongings were allegedly destroyed during the operation.
