Honda Suspends Planned $15-Billion Canadian EV Project Amid Weak Market Demand

Japanese automaker Honda has indefinitely suspended its planned $15-billion electric vehicle (EV) project in Canada, raising concerns about the future of major EV investments in the country’s automotive sector.

The company confirmed that the suspension affects its previously announced EV value-chain project in Alliston, Ontario, which included plans for a new electric vehicle assembly plant and battery production facilities.

In a statement released Thursday, Honda said the decision was based on changing business conditions, evolving market demand for electric vehicles, and a revised global strategy. The company stated that current market realities no longer support moving forward with the massive project at this stage.

Despite the suspension, Honda emphasized that its existing manufacturing operations in Alliston will continue without interruption. The company said current employment levels and production of the popular Civic and CR-V models, including hybrid versions, would remain unaffected.

The EV initiative, first announced in 2024, was expected to create approximately 1,000 new manufacturing jobs in Ontario and had received funding commitments from both the federal and Ontario governments. However, Honda clarified that no public funds had yet been transferred to the company before the suspension was announced.

Industry analysts say slowing demand for fully electric vehicles in North America, combined with rising production costs and uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs and EV subsidies, have forced several automakers to rethink aggressive electrification plans.

Reports also indicate that Honda is increasingly shifting its North American strategy toward hybrid vehicles instead of fully electric models. More than 60 percent of the vehicles Honda currently produces in Canada are hybrids, reflecting continued consumer demand for gasoline-electric technology.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reportedly described Honda’s decision as “absolutely disappointing,” highlighting concerns about the economic impact on Canada’s growing EV manufacturing ambitions.

Honda has operated in Canada since 1986 and remains one of the country’s largest automobile manufacturers, producing more than 400,000 vehicles annually at its Ontario facilities.
