A Frontier Airlines passenger jet struck and killed a person on a runway at Denver International Airport late Friday night after the individual allegedly breached airport security and entered a restricted area during the aircraft’s takeoff.
According to airport authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time when Frontier Airlines Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles, reported hitting a pedestrian while accelerating for departure. Officials confirmed the victim died at the scene.
Authorities said the unidentified individual had jumped the airport’s perimeter fence only minutes before the collision and was not believed to be an airport employee. Investigators are now examining how the person managed to gain access to the active runway area despite existing security measures.
The impact reportedly triggered a brief engine fire and caused smoke inside the cabin, forcing the pilots to immediately abort takeoff procedures. Emergency crews from the Denver Fire Department quickly responded to extinguish the fire while passengers were evacuated using emergency slides.
Frontier Airlines confirmed that the aircraft was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members at the time of the incident. Reports indicate that at least 12 people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation, with five passengers transported to hospitals for treatment.
Audio from air traffic control communications captured the pilot urgently informing controllers, “We just hit somebody,” moments before reporting smoke and fire onboard the aircraft.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the incident as a serious security breach, stating that the trespasser deliberately scaled the airport fence before running onto the runway. Federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), have joined local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
Frontier Airlines later released a statement expressing sorrow over the tragedy and confirmed it is cooperating fully with investigators. Airport operations experienced temporary disruptions overnight, although affected runways were later reopened following emergency response and evidence collection activities.
