Canada opened its campaign at the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship with one of the tournament’s most star-studded rosters in recent memory, headlined by veteran captain Sidney Crosby and teenage sensation Macklin Celebrini.
The championship, being held in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland from May 15 to May 31, has already generated major international attention due to Canada’s blend of experienced NHL stars and emerging young talent.
Crosby’s late addition to the Canadian squad became one of the biggest stories heading into the tournament. The 38-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins superstar had initially been left off the preliminary roster as he continued recovering from injuries sustained during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. However, Hockey Canada confirmed earlier this week that Crosby would join the national team in Switzerland, immediately boosting expectations for the Canadians.
Despite Crosby’s arrival, Hockey Canada decided to keep Celebrini as team captain — a historic move that makes the 19-year-old the youngest captain ever for Canada’s senior men’s hockey team.
The decision reflects Celebrini’s rapidly growing importance to Canadian hockey following a remarkable breakout season. The San Jose Sharks forward emerged as one of Canada’s standout performers during the 2026 Winter Olympics, where he helped Canada capture silver after a dramatic overtime loss to the United States in the gold medal game.
Sports analysts have described the partnership between Crosby and Celebrini as symbolic of a generational transition in Canadian hockey — pairing one of the greatest players of his era with the country’s newest superstar prospect. CBC Sports highlighted the excitement surrounding the duo’s reunion on the international stage ahead of Canada’s opening game against Sweden.
Canada enters the tournament as one of the favourites, with a roster featuring several NHL stars including John Tavares, Ryan O’Reilly, Mark Scheifele, Morgan Rielly and Darnell Nurse. Analysts believe the Canadian squad was assembled partly in response to the disappointment of losing Olympic gold earlier this year to Team USA.
Crosby’s international résumé already ranks among the greatest in hockey history. The Nova Scotia native has won Olympic gold medals, World Championship titles, and multiple NHL championships throughout his career. His return to the World Championship once again demonstrates his long-standing commitment to representing Canada internationally even in the later stages of his career.
For Celebrini, the tournament represents another major step in what has already become one of the fastest rises in recent hockey history. After starring in junior hockey and quickly transitioning into NHL and Olympic competition, the teenager is now being viewed as a central figure in Canada’s future on the international stage.
Canada opened the tournament Friday against Sweden in what many observers considered an early championship-calibre matchup. The tournament continues through the end of May, with the medal rounds expected to feature strong competition from Sweden, the United States, Czechia and host nation Switzerland.
