A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting in Brampton that left one person seriously injured, according to Peel Regional Police.
Investigators say the incident occurred earlier this week in Brampton, prompting an extensive police response and a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.
Police identified the accused as a man in his twenties who now faces several charges, including attempted murder and firearms-related offences. Authorities allege the shooting was a targeted incident and not a random act of violence.
According to investigators, officers quickly launched a search following reports of gunfire and were able to arrest a suspect shortly afterward. Evidence recovered during the investigation allegedly included a loaded firearm.
The accused was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing. Police have not released additional details regarding the relationship between the suspect and the victim or a possible motive for the shooting.
Peel Regional Police continue to appeal for witnesses and anyone with information, surveillance footage or dashcam video to come forward as investigators work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The latest case adds to growing concerns about gun violence across the Greater Toronto Area, where police have recorded a number of shootings in recent months. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly called on the public to assist investigations and report information that could help prevent further incidents.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges or arrests could follow as detectives continue gathering evidence.
