Lebanon has called for a one-month extension of the fragile ceasefire with Israel as efforts intensify to halt ongoing destruction in southern parts of the country and prevent a return to full-scale conflict.
According to reports, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has instructed his delegation to push for an extension of the truce while engaging in diplomatic talks aimed at ensuring compliance and reducing violations. The move comes amid continued concerns over instability along the border and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
Officials say the proposed extension is intended to create space for negotiations and reinforce commitments from all parties to respect the ceasefire terms. Lebanese authorities are also seeking guarantees that attacks and destruction of villages in the south will be halted, as many communities have already suffered significant damage.
The conflict between Israel and armed groups in Lebanon, particularly Hezbollah, has led to repeated clashes in recent months. Despite temporary ceasefires, sporadic violence and mutual accusations of violations have continued, undermining efforts toward long-term peace.
Recent estimates indicate that the scale of destruction in southern Lebanon is severe, with tens of thousands of housing units either damaged or completely destroyed. This has forced many residents to flee their homes, deepening the humanitarian crisis and placing additional pressure on the Lebanese government.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with Lebanon engaging regional and international partners to build support for its position. Authorities hope that extending the ceasefire will allow for better coordination of humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts, as well as create conditions for broader peace negotiations.
However, analysts warn that the situation remains fragile. Continued hostilities, coupled with regional tensions involving Iran and Israel, could quickly derail progress if violations persist or escalate.
The call for a ceasefire extension reflects a broader urgency to stabilize the region, where overlapping conflicts and political tensions continue to threaten security and economic stability.
As negotiations continue, the outcome of Lebanon’s request may play a crucial role in determining whether the region moves toward de-escalation or faces renewed violence in the coming weeks.
