Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi have held a closed-door meeting in Abuja as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with discussions reportedly centred on opposition unity and the possibility of a broad coalition.

According to reports, the meeting took place on Monday, April 27, 2026, and brought together Obi alongside other South-East political leaders who engaged Jonathan on the current state of the nation and emerging political alignments.

Sources familiar with the engagement described the discussions as “high-level” and focused on the need for opposition parties to consider a unified front capable of presenting a single presidential candidate in 2027.

Following the meeting, Peter Obi stated that the consultations were part of broader efforts aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges, including unity, security, stability, and governance reforms. He emphasized that the dialogue was constructive and centred on repositioning the country for better leadership outcomes.

Obi has in recent months intensified political consultations across different regions, meeting key stakeholders as discussions around a potential opposition alliance continue to gain momentum ahead of the next general election cycle.

The development comes amid growing speculation about possible political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space, where discussions around coalition-building have increasingly become a central theme ahead of 2027.

While neither Jonathan nor Obi has officially confirmed any formal alliance arrangement, political observers say such engagements reflect ongoing efforts to reshape opposition strategy in anticipation of a highly competitive electoral contest.
