Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after merchant vessels attempting to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz reported coming under gunfire, as Iran issued a defiant message and moved to tighten control over the vital maritime route.

According to maritime security and shipping sources, at least two vessels were struck by gunfire while navigating the narrow waterway, raising fresh concerns over the safety of global shipping routes amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The incident comes shortly after Iran announced it was reimposing stricter military oversight of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply is transported. The move follows continued pressure from U.S. forces, including a blockade of Iranian ports during the ongoing conflict.

Maritime tracking data earlier showed a convoy of eight oil tankers attempting to transit the strait, marking one of the first significant shipping movements since the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and U.S.-Israeli forces several weeks ago.

In a strongly worded message, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, declared that the country’s navy was prepared to deliver what he described as “new bitter defeats” to its adversaries, signaling Tehran’s readiness to escalate military actions if provoked.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for energy supplies, and any disruption to shipping in the region has immediate global economic implications. Analysts warn that continued instability could further strain oil markets and intensify geopolitical tensions across the Middle East.

The latest developments underscore the fragile security environment in the Gulf region, where escalating military posturing and direct confrontations at sea are raising fears of a broader conflict that could disrupt international trade and energy flows on a significant scale.
