Former Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has taken a strong early lead in the country’s parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results, signaling a potential political shift following months of unrest and public dissatisfaction.

Early vote counts showed Radev’s political movement, Progressive Bulgaria, securing approximately 44.6 percent of the vote after about one-third of ballots had been counted, placing him significantly ahead of rival parties.

Radev, a former fighter pilot known for his eurosceptic stance and opposition to military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, stepped down from the presidency earlier in January to contest the parliamentary elections.

The election follows a period of political instability in Bulgaria, where mass protests in December forced the previous government out of power, triggering the snap vote. Analysts say the outcome could reshape the country’s foreign policy direction, particularly regarding relations with the European Union and Russia.

Observers note that Radev’s lead reflects growing public frustration with the political establishment and economic pressures, which have dominated national discourse in recent months. His campaign has capitalized on these concerns, positioning him as an alternative to traditional pro-European parties.

While the results remain preliminary, the strong showing by Radev’s party suggests it could play a dominant role in forming the next government if the trend continues. Final results and coalition negotiations are expected to determine the country’s political direction in the coming days.

The development marks a critical moment in Bulgaria’s political landscape, as voters signal a possible shift in leadership and policy priorities amid ongoing regional and global tensions.
