The Nigerian government has assured its citizens stranded in the Middle East that evacuation plans are underway but will only proceed once it is safe for aircraft to operate in the region’s airspace.
The assurance was given by the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, following appeals from Nigerians trapped in the region amid escalating tensions and security concerns affecting international flights.
Dabiri-Erewa explained that the government was closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of citizens before initiating evacuation efforts. According to her, evacuation flights cannot be carried out until the airspace becomes safe for operations.
She noted that Nigerian officials were in contact with affected citizens and relevant diplomatic missions while assessing the evolving situation in the region. The government, she said, remains committed to ensuring the safety and return of Nigerians who may be stranded due to the crisis.
The situation follows rising tensions in parts of the Middle East, which have disrupted air travel and left several foreign nationals, including Nigerians, unable to leave affected areas.
Authorities emphasized that the safety of evacuees and flight crews remains the top priority. Officials added that evacuation would begin immediately once aviation authorities confirm that the airspace is secure enough for flights to operate safely.
The Nigerian government has previously carried out similar evacuation operations during crises in foreign countries, coordinating with diplomatic missions and international partners to assist citizens abroad.
For now, stranded Nigerians in the region have been urged to remain calm while authorities continue monitoring developments and preparing for possible evacuation once conditions allow.
