UYO, Akwa Ibom State — Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have taken into custody a 36-year-old Cameroonian fisherman in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a four-year-old child in Mkpanak Village, Mbo Local Government Area of the state, local authorities confirmed on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Mbake, was arrested on March 1, 2026, after police responded to a complaint from a woman named Gift, whose daughter showed signs of possible abuse while being bathed by her mother on February 24, 2026. Following careful questioning, the child reportedly provided information that enabled investigators to identify an adult male she said was involved.

Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John said that officers quickly expanded surveillance in the neighbourhood and apprehended Mbake along with others who were detained for further investigation. An identification parade was held according to established procedures, during which the child identified Mbake as the person allegedly involved in the incident.

According to the statement, a medical examination form was issued promptly, and the victim received immediate medical attention as part of the formal investigation. The police command condemned all forms of sexual abuse, especially against minors, and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of society.

No official charge details have been released yet, but the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities have urged parents, guardians and community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station without delay.
