Nigeria’s aviation regulator, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has summoned Air Peace for an urgent meeting following a wave of passenger complaints over recent flight disruptions, delayed refunds, and alleged poor handling of affected travelers.
The regulatory action comes after reports from passengers on the airline’s Abuja–London service who experienced operational disruptions and unexpected travel changes during their journey. According to the NCAA, the situation has raised serious concerns about passenger welfare and airline compliance with aviation consumer protection regulations.
Authorities disclosed that the airline has been invited to appear at the NCAA headquarters in Abuja for a meeting scheduled to review the circumstances surrounding the disruptions and determine whether Air Peace violated aviation service standards.
Passenger Complaints Trigger Regulatory Action
The controversy reportedly began after passengers on a Heathrow–Abuja flight were rerouted through Gatwick, Lagos, and then back to Abuja, leaving some travelers stranded and confused about their travel arrangements.
Officials at the NCAA said the complaints prompted the aviation watchdog to activate its consumer protection framework to investigate the incident and ensure that passengers’ rights were not violated. The agency emphasized that protecting airline passengers remains a key responsibility under Nigeria’s aviation regulations.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA stated that the authority would not tolerate situations where paying passengers are abandoned or poorly treated by airlines operating in the country. The regulator also warned that appropriate sanctions could be imposed if investigations confirm that airline rules or passenger protection policies were breached.
Air Peace Responds to Allegations
In response to the complaints, Air Peace explained that the disruption on the Abuja–London route occurred after the aircraft experienced a safety concern during the flight. The airline said the plane had to return to base after the crew noticed a cracked windshield, which was suspected to have been caused by a bird strike.
According to the airline, the precautionary return was carried out in line with international aviation safety procedures, and the aircraft landed safely at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where passengers disembarked without incident.
Air Peace also rejected claims circulating on social media suggesting that passengers were abandoned during the disruption. The airline maintained that safety considerations guided its decision and insisted that it remained committed to providing safe and reliable services.
Aviation Authority Promises Thorough Investigation
Despite the airline’s explanation, the NCAA said it would conduct a comprehensive review of the incident, including examining complaints about delayed refunds, compensations, and the handling of stranded passengers.
The authority reiterated that while it supports the growth of domestic airlines, operators must adhere strictly to aviation rules and consumer protection standards. Officials also emphasized that airlines operating in Nigeria must ensure transparency and proper communication with passengers during disruptions.
Industry analysts say the investigation could lead to sanctions if the airline is found to have violated passenger protection guidelines or operational standards.
As the investigation unfolds, the NCAA has assured travelers that it will continue to enforce strict oversight of airline operations to ensure passenger safety and service accountability across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
